It was a spectacular weekend at the 46th Sweethearts Regatta, with 10 boats on the start line and 8 pushing through to the finish in true Caribbean style.
At 7:00am the Anchorage was glassy calm, not a ripple in sight. Light winds were forecast and it looked doubtful early on, but as the morning unfolded the breeze began to fill in and the racing quickly turned electric.
The first drama of the day came from Full Tilt, the Hobie 20 owned by Niall Brooks and skippered by 17 year old Blyden Aldridge. As they came through the cut at Steel Point, a shackle failed and the mast came down, launching the crew off the trapeze and into the water. Thanks to the swift response of the committee boat, everyone was recovered safely and spirits remained high.
Not long after, Sea Otter, a Bavaria 38 Ocean fresh in from Bermuda, also suffered a dismasting mid race. The crew did an outstanding job recovering their rig and making it home unassisted, all under the watchful eye of Husky Towing.
Despite the setbacks, the regatta was a huge success. Competitive racing, great seamanship, and classic BVI resilience were on full display. A big thank you to Teri Grossman for capturing the action so beautifully, and to our generous sponsors Goslings Rum and Omar’s on the Sandspit for their continued support.
Most importantly, thank you to all the loyal sailors and supporters who made the weekend what it was.
