Firecracker 500 - July 2022

The arrival of a Tropical Depression, forecasts of gusts up to 30 kts and copious amounts of rain were enough to dissuade even the hardiest of sailors from venturing out on the course on Saturday 2nd July for the Clubs 31st Annual Firecracker 500 event. This did not prevent the associated shoreside Chili Cook Off going ahead and a good turnout was witnessed at Omars Fusion in the early part of the evening. A wide range of Chilis from furiously hot to fruity, exotic and mild provided something for all palettes. The blind tasting awarded first place to Rod Slagle followed closely by a Chili from Omars master chef Doss, and third place went to Ted Reshetiloff. A check for the proceeds will be going to the Tortola Sloop Foundation. Last place in the scoring was awarded (albeit anonymously) the traditional prize of a roll of tissue paper and a bottle of Pepto-Bismol .

Lured by forecasts of better weather on the Sunday, a few competitors were able to rearrange their busy schedules and race the traditional figure eight course around the Thatches and out to Sandy Cay. In the event the unexpectedly vigorous remains of the weather provided some very healthy gusts and even the occasional lull. The finish took the boats down to the bottom of Great Thatch and then a very wet beat back up to Soper’s Hole.

First place went to Chesney Coswell in Libertas, a Beneteau First 40, second place went to Ted Reshetiloff in Happiness, a Taswell 49, and third place to Niall Brooks in Full Montsea, also a Beneteau 40. Despite the weather all returned safely in good time to Soper’s Hole and despite the collective appearance of drowned rats, appeared to be in good spirits.

Grateful thanks to the Race Committee and Omars Fusion and all who organized and participated in this event. And particular thanks to the generosity of our prize sponsors: Cooper Island Beach Club, Digicel, Willie T and Oasis.
